Federal republic of Nigeria contains thirty six states and one Federal Capital Territory. Nigeria is located in West Africa and shares land borders with the republic of Benin in the west, Cameroon and Chad in the east and Niger is in the north. Its coast lies on the Gulf of Guinea, a section of the Atlantic Ocean, in the south. Nigerian Capital is Abuja. The three biggest and most influential ethnic groups in Nigeria are the Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba.
The name Nigeria was come from a portmanteau of the words Niger and Area, taken from the river Niger passing through Nigeria. This name was coined by Flora Shaw, the future wife of Baron Lugard, who was a British colonial administrator, in the late 19th century.
